The short version. BiteFax has no accounts, no ads, and no tracking. We don't ask for your name or email. Your camera never sends pictures anywhere: your phone reads the barcode itself. To look up a product, the barcode number goes to food databases run by other people. Your list of scans stays on your phone until you tap Clear my scans.
Nothing that identifies you. BiteFax has no sign-up, no profile, no cookies for tracking, and no advertising.
The app asks your phone for camera access so it can read a barcode. The video is handled inside the app on your own phone. No photo or video is uploaded, stored, or sent to us or anyone else. You can also skip the camera and type the number under the barcode.
To tell you what's in a product, the app has to ask a food database about that barcode. Here is every place a barcode number goes.
| Who | What they get | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open Food Facts | The barcode number, plus your device's IP address and browser type, because your phone asks them directly | Ingredients and product name |
| USDA FoodData Central | The barcode number only. The request goes through our server, so the USDA does not see your IP address | Ingredients when Open Food Facts has none |
| Cloudflare | Standard web server records: IP address, time, and which page was requested | They host the app |
| jsDelivr | Your IP address and browser type when the page loads | They deliver the barcode-reading code the app uses |
Those companies have their own privacy policies, linked above. We don't control what they do with what they receive.
The app keeps your recent scans (the last 40), plus a copy of the additive table so it works with no signal, in your phone's own storage so you can tap back through them, and so the list is still there tomorrow. It never leaves your phone, and we can't see it. Tap Clear my scans in the app to erase it, or clear your browser data.
BiteFax isn't aimed at children under 13, and it doesn't knowingly collect anything from them. Since it collects no personal information from anyone, there is nothing for us to delete.
If you are in the EU, the UK, or a US state with a privacy law such as California: those laws give you rights over personal information a company holds about you. We hold none, so there is nothing to hand over, correct, or delete. You can still write to us and ask.
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Anything that changes what leaves your phone will be said plainly here.
